"OFF GRID ENTHUSIAST" has a good set-up for energy independence. I would like to learn more on that.

Well if our electric grid gets sabotaged then needmorebrains you can think of me when you either run out of water and die of thirst or run out of food and starve along with most of the population while I sit in my air conditioned room watching videos on my large TV drinking filtered spring water and when I get hungry I can either open a can of chili, or make some beans and rice in the crock pot, or pull a steak from the freezer and barbecue it. I already have plans with a couple neighbors to band together for protection while we wait things out and when the deer population makes a comeback we can replenish our freezers.

lol. Guys like you keep the rest if going. I know another guy that’s been planning Armageddon for 40 years. His stored food and off grid shit is wearing out and going bad. What’s there going to be to watch on your big tv if there is nobody else around? How about when the beans run out and the deer have disease. You guys think you are so smart and really know nothing. You live your life thinking you’ll be the only ones left when everyone else is gone! lol that is hilarious!

Well, Needmore, you are certainly not an enthusiast for living off-grid. I have enjoyed roughing it. I enjoy heating water with the sun or on a wood stove. I like saving money by using less electricity or having a property where I pay no electric bills and no water bills. It is a great feeling not getting those bills. I enjoy seeing a good earth-sheltered home or a nice sunroom. You don't know what you're missing!

Many years ago I owned 5 acres in the Arizona desert and wanted to build a straw bale house. I planned on making it's footprint approximately 75' x 75'. I was looking at wind power and solar power but at the time those were very expensive and not practical. There was no power out there so as much as I wanted to build there it just wasn't going to happen with either of those options. The only other option was to build my own power plant using a diesel generator, but It wasn't practical either because I would have to haul fuel whenever I needed it. I decided against developing the property and got rid of it.
My dreams and technology were out of sink so I had to wait for things to catch up to my dreams and the development of lifp04 batteries was the stepping stone I needed to make that happen. Prior to the development of lithium batteries power storage had to rely mainly on wet cell battery technology which had severe limitations. You basically lost 50% of your power when you stored it in them. With lithium you get 92% return efficiency and the batteries will last a lifetime with reasonable care.

They don't require any maintenance as long as they are hooked up to a battery management system which all prebuilt battery's have. Heat will shorten their lives some but you will still get at least 20 years out of them as long as it's not extreme heat. They are also very safe as long as you take certain precautions like using proper fusing & wire sizes they can be kept indoors. Unlike wet cells that out gas while being charged, lifep04 don't out gas and won't catch fire. There are some lithium ion batteries that are very dangerous but lifep04 are very safe.

Lithium batteries do not last a life time and they are dangerous! You go ahead and sleep near a bank of lithium that is large enough to power anything other than a cell phone. You might wake up the next morning or you might not. lol depends on the connections.

In the typical solar setup lifep04 batteries get such gentile use that a lifetime is not an unreasonable expectation. They are typically rated for 20 years but that's at charging to 100% and discharging to 0% state of charge. Also at that point they will have only lost 20% of their capacity so you still have 80% of usable capacity. And no these aren't dangerous like some the other lithium chemistries. Most people like me do keep these in the house without any fear of fire or explosion because unlike other lithium batteries these don't produce oxygen or flammable gases when heated.

The only potential problem that could arise would be from improper installation and the use of to small of wiring or improper fusing which in the case of a failure of a battery cell in the form of an internal short would cause a large amount of energy to flow into the battery which could cause a fire if you don't use the correct fuse. Or if you use wiring that's to small for the loads you pull from the battery which could cause the insulation on the wiring to catch fire or the wire itself will become so hot it could catch other flammable things nearby on fire.

    Interesting stuff
Yes, I have heard of cell phone fires and my cell phone has heated up when left in the car, so there is a cool down message. I guess it is like bottled water. One is warned about plastic water bottles being left in a car. True of those cell phones being left on a seat as well. Yep! Lithium batteries are the new way to go. My sister-in-law has Lithium Batteries in her Tesla, and my brother has Lithium in his Toyota Prius.

I thought of retrofitting solar panels onto an electric golf car. Great for zipping around in a small town or at the lake.

The Tesla's in the US have a type of lithium batteries that will burn and explode so do cell phones and laptops. There's rarley a problem with them because the battery management systems (BMS) are pretty robust, but there have been a number of Tesla's that have burned and it likely happened because there was a problem with the BMS. Tesla's being outdoors dealing with the heat, cold, rain, snow and vibrations take a toll on anything electrical so failures are a possibility.
A solar panel on a golf cart would only put out enough power to supplement the battery and not anything close to running the motor. Lets say you put a 500 watt panel on the roof. You could expect maybe 10 amps from the panel and the motor probably pulls at least 40 amps at startup.

I zipped along on a solar trike once. I did not even need to peddle. The peddling was in low gear, so no fun to peddle in low gear anyhow. Put the solar trike went lickety-split. That did not even have a battery - Just sunlight!

The trike probably had a pretty efficient but small motor. Your pedaling would take the place of a battery which would normally be needed when the motor demands the most power which would be right at start up. Motors typically require at least 10x what it needs once up to full speed. Solar panels work best at pushing power and their power will tend to drop off when you try to pull power from them like a motor would and so your pedaling would get the motor up to speed and reduce the power pulled from the panel. I'm sure the trike also had a multi point power tracker (MPPT) controller. They are used in all solar power systems to track the output from the solar panels to balance the voltage and load according to the amount of sun the panel is recieving.

It was a pretty simple solar trike. I liked it but it was outside my budget. $3,000 for essentially a tricycle.
The tricycle was different from most grown-up tricycles in that it had two wheels in front where the solar panel was located and one wheel back. Most tricycles are designed with a simple frame and one wheel front and two wheels back. Nonetheless, I did enjoy riding it, and probably rode it more than anyone else at the event. At that event, there was an enclosed trailer with photovoltaic cells mounted on one side of the trailer and a portable power station inside and a wind turbine being sold at cost to promote the product. I wish I had bought a couple of those trailers. Still regret that I didn't. They also were throwing in the training for free. Everything was new!

Do you remember those OLD MOPEDS?
    My uncle had a couple.
There one would peddle, and the motor amplified your effort (without fuel and without battery).
Now one sees scooters, but not as many mopeds.

Why would anyone have a problem with someone who's been gifted with enough intelligence to do a lot of things? Jealousy maybe? There are people out there that are highly intelligent and certainly many people that are more intelligent than myself. I just did things that I liked which included building and repairing things. I found by doing those things I increased my knowledge and ability's. Building an electric car would have been a daunting task and I certainly could have failed at it, but at least trying it is better than wasting time on a website soliciting sexual perversions from other men.
