CHOOSING TO LIVE NOT ON THE GRID (69)
-
Aug 19, 2025 11:51 PM UTCI could give you specifics about my system but since I built it in 2020 the technology has improved and the cost is lower. It's also much simpler to build a system. It's still not dirt cheap and the payback will take years. I built my system mainly so that my lights would always be on whether the grid was up or down. Here's the basic specs for my system:
18 x 310 watt solar panels = 5580 watts total
2 x 3000 watt 24 volt inverters = 6000 watts @ 240 volts
4 x 270 amp hour 24 volt lifep04 battery packs = 26 kilowatts
There are many other things that had to be purchased like wiring, connectors, mounting parts for panels and other misc parts and tools. It cost roughly $12,000 a comparable system might cost around $10,000 now. I did all the work myself which was complicated at the time because in order to keep the cost down I bought raw battery cells and built the battery packs myself. Now you can get them already built for less than what I paid. My system is a very modest at 6000 watts. It's enough to do everything I need but 10,000 watts would have been much better but at the time nobody made an affordable 10,000 watt inverter. Now there a dime a dozen.
I could upgrade my system to the larger setup but with my illness I can't physically do the work and would have to ask my neighbor to help. He would do it but since it's not necessary I won't. I need him for when I have to have help and not just because I want it.
Anyway if you want to put in a system there's a certain amount of customizing that needs to be done. You first need to know what you want to power and then how much power they all require then you can calculate the minimum set up you need. After that you need to figure out where you are going to mount the inverter and batteries. The hardest part now is where and how are you going to mount your solar panels. They are hands down the most difficult part. You can mount them on your roof which usually requires a permit. Or you can ground mount them which doesn't require a permit.

Aug 20, 2025 4:50 AM UTCI'm glad the costs are coming down. I have thought to retrofit solar cells on a camper. I have even thought to make an old trailer house into a sunroom. I thought I might make one into a PASSIVE SOLAR HOT WATER HEATER LAUNDRY ROOM where I can hang my laundry and drip dry it and have it completely sheltered from the rain. I would like to repurpose some old campers and see how well I can GO SOLAR small scale.

I thought I might make one into a PASSIVE SOLAR HOT WATER HEATER LAUNDRY ROOM where I can hang my laundry and drip dry it and have it completely sheltered from the rain. I would like to repurpose some old campers and see how well I can GO SOLAR small scale.
Your old campers could make a good platform to mount solar panels. I have a flat bed trailer that I considered mounting the additional panels I would need to upgrade to a 10,000 watt system.
When I was trying to decide on the size of my system the one thing that gave me the most grief was heating my water. I kicked around all kinds of ideas. I had already built a passive water heater at my old residence in San Diego where temperatures are much milder and almost no chance the solar water heater I built would freeze. But here we can get temperatures below freezing for days at a time. That complicates any outdoor solar water heater installations. I decided against building a passive system because of the freezing issue. There are non passive systems but again complicated and very expensive to boot.
So that leaves my indoor water heater and since my place used to be a children's home I have two 80 gallon electric water heaters plumbed in series. I did a lot of research about using DC directly from my solar panels to power one of my water heaters. I went on the Solar power forums and asked questions of some of the members but they all set up complicated systems and I wanted something simple. There were also several safety concerns when connecting panels directly to a water heater which is what made the systems so complicated.
The other alternative was to power my water heater from my inverter but since my system wasn't going to be very big trying to power a 240 volt 4500 watt water heater was out of the question with the other loads my small system would already be powering. Until I realized I could just replace the 4500 watt elements with smaller 2500 watt elements but that was still a lot so I had to come up with a way to limit even that amount of power. The solution was to put the water heater on a timer and only run it during peak sun hours when there was excess solar power.
The system has worked flawlessly. In fact my whole system has been running great until this summer. One of my solar strings is down because one of the connections fried. There must have been some resistance at the connection point which caused heat to build up and eventually cooked it. Combine that with mostly cloudy days for the last 2 months and my solar production has been about half of normal. Fixing the connection would be simple except it has a constant 120 volts dc coming from the panels and is deadly if you touched it. You cant just turn the panels off so anytime there's any sun it will be putting out power so it would have to be at night. It's also something I can't do but my neighbor will but it's to hot right now even at night so I won't let him at it until it cools off. -
Aug 20, 2025 2:06 PM UTCGood you came up with a remedy. I favor simple systems too. One has a sunroom, then one can have a passive solar water heater inside ready to catch the sunlight and in those cold months of the year, the system can stay heated by the warmer inside temperatures as one heats the home by other means such as the burning of wood. A sod hut would have warmer temperatures inside during the winter and cooler inside temperatures during the summer. I believe modern technology should only supplement good design. I have some favor to having an OCULUS like the Pantheon in Rome and welcome in that daylight right in the center of a room. I thought of having a Yurt that way. Igloos have an oculus as well. One could harvest water like a funnel with an inverted oculus design. Some indoor Roman bathes had an oculus at the center of the arched roof. Paint the inside white and attract all that free light. Then solar lights could light it by night.
Solar hot water heaters were big in Florida a hundred years ago till a Big Freeze caught them unexpected and damaged most of the outside solar hot water heater systems. Some people put anti-freeze in their solar hot water systems and then use an exchange system to heat the water. So that is another approach. I, myself, like to use empty milk jugs and fill them with water and put them out for the sun to heat. The water gets scalding hot. Makes for a good sponge bath. -

Anything above 48 volts is considered to be dangerous. Of course you need some amperage to make it deadly. But even low voltage can be dangerous if you get past the natural resistance of the body. As an example: I read a story on a forum used by electricians about a guy who was killed by a little 9 volt battery. He died because he didn't believe it contained enough power to stop his heart.
What he did was hook up the battery to a couple wires with needles attached and poked one into a finger on each hand and it stopped his heart. The reason it killed him is because he bypassed the skin which is what provides the resistance that would have stopped such a low voltage from penetrating the body with enough amperage to stop his heart. The blood contains a lot of iron and water and by contacting it directly he provided a very low path of resistance directly to his heart. So he got the Darwin of the year award. -
Aug 20, 2025 5:23 PM UTCThe 9 volt battery story is more bullshit. You believe all that crap keep thinking trump is a savior. My good friend is a paramedic. It takes much more than a 9volt battery to stop a heart unless of course it was going to stop anyway.
-
Aug 20, 2025 6:07 PM UTCIt is imperative to realize that due to the low resistance of the heart, a current of only 10 mA is sufficient to kill us. A pierced needle may create a pathway, but resistance is still high. Direct contact with conductive materials is necessary for current to flow effectively to internal organs. The heart is sensitive to electrical currents, but low voltage is unlikely to cause harm. Once started, the chaotic rhythm known as ventricular fibrillation (VF) will often not stop by itself without external intervention Besides, electrical signals in the body primarily rely on nerve cells rather than blood for transmission.
If it is real that the guy passed away, it must be due to the injury the needle caused to his epithelial tissue.

Aug 20, 2025 9:10 PM UTCIt’s ok. He believes that he will be ok if the grid is sabotaged too not realizing that there is an army if people that will be in panic stealing and killing to survive. His solar panels and filtered water and big tv will last about 2 days. He also believes he is gods gift to women and that women are a lower class than men. I’m sure he will stand behind the 9volt battery story because he read it somewhere. lol probably on the internet.

I've given you ample opportunity to prove it yourself but you want to try and take the easy way out.. But I'm not letting you off the hook because your whole purpose in starting this argument was to try and find something that you can prove me wrong on.
Which by the way I would be happy if you would prove me wrong. But there's only way I will accept defeat and you already know what that is. I think you should use that as an opportunity to earn some money by making a YouTube video of the spectacle. But I do encourage you to take every safety precaution like having EMTs standing by. You know just in case. Although if you are proven wrong I'm not sure YouTube would let you post the video even if you're successfully revived.

That would mean that you're sure there's no danger to you if you do the experiment. You could possibly make a lot of money on YouTube. So what are you waiting for?

Oh that's rich. You insert yourself into my conversation and follow me around repeatedly responding to my comments and then you use obummers ugly mug in a meme to say I'm stalking you. Do you know what's that's called? I'll give you a hint. It's what feminist and liberals do all the time........
Give up? Okay then I'll tell you. It's called projection and with your meme you're trying to project on to me the very thing that you yourself are doing. OOPS there goes that foot in your mouth again.

I have inserted only health comments in your posts in the beginning. Never used second person 'you', and 'you' repeatedly to humiliate me as you do!
Go and learn mannes how to behave in an online discussion form.
No wonder your wife abandoned you, moron..! -

You try so hard to be the innocent victim but just love to hurl insults. Are you an innocent victim or or a not so innocent troll? Actually you're not innocent, you even said you were going to punish me and here's your exact words "I am punishing you with whatever I can, stupid man!" And you're trying to do exactly that. So stop trying to play the victim because nobody's buying it. And if I'm a stupid man why do I best you everytime?
The only thing you've done is claim to have beaten me with your superior intelligence when I didn't want to play your silly meme game. That whole thing was pathetic.
Image is everything to a woman and your image is suffering because of your trolling. I'm not just going to roll over when you try to insult me. All your insulting memes you think are cute don't come off that way. You just don't seem to get how childish they really are. But hey if you want to keep destroying your image then you go girl! Also the videos you post fall pretty flat so you might try posting things that are more interesting.
One last thing: At least I was good enough to be happily married for 26 out of 28 years. AND by the time I was 29 I had already been married 5 years and by the time my wife was 29 she had been married 9 years. So where's your husband? Ahh, not good enough to land a man while the wall is approaching ever so steadily. I see a spinster with a lot cats in your future.

You know NOTHING mister, except spitting foul from your stinky mouth! You have NO skill to post a single meme in a post. All cowards utter the same gibberish as you do when thoroughly beaten by an educated woman like me. I thought you would express shame and remorse to show the viewers your regret.
Pity you, loser!
The videos I post here comprise a wide range of subjects such as, Education, Science & Technology, Music, Inspirational, Dating, News and Politics, Sad/emotional, Food, Comedy, Entertainment, Philosophy, Pets and Animals and more! My viewers know it; they appreciate my videos and view them in multiples of hundreds! On the other hand, you have posted three annoying videos on slanderous subjects of misogyny and male chauvinism. Shame on you, Mr. Nincompoop!
I am jealous of people who have never met you! I wonder how your wife survived an arrogant (as well dumb) individual like you for such long years. Thank God for providing her with wisdom in the final run!
It is better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you’re stupid than open it and remove all doubt!

Aug 23, 2025 11:54 AM UTCWe must harness the ill-energy. IT COULD POWER THE WORLD.
I remember an old episode of Star Trek where an alien life-form thrived on conflict. Everyone was killing one another again and again repeatedly and the alien life-form would bring them to life again and again thriving upon the conflict. Their fuel was the conflict. Conflict sustained it. It fed on ill energy. We need that kind of energy to power the world. If only we can harness that energy, ALL OF OUR POWER NEEDS WILL BE MET.

We can all live OFFGRID!

Introduction To Friends List
I too am an offgrid enthusiast, and I would like to learn more about your approach. I want to know some of your ideas and those of other people. An approach to life NOT ON THE GRID. I have moments of roughing it, and I've enjoyed heating water in jugs using sunlight and taking a nice hot sponge bath outside naked or in a bathing suit and sometimes I heat water with a wood stove and cook on a wood stove, I'd really love to have an earth-sheltered dwelling and I'd love to have a sun room. .
I would really like to learn other people's approach to life not on the grid.
